Michelle

We were walking in a region near Mirebalais called Peligro. In Peligro there is the only dam in Haiti. Frank tells me that the dam is referenced in the book about Paul Farmer, Mountains Beyond Mountains. We met the dam operator who happens to be a pastor (great contact) and then we met a mother and daughter by the dam as well. The mother explained to us that her daughter who is 10yrs. old had a large fibrous tumor around her stomach region and then showed us her (Michelle's) stomach. There was a growth the size of a canteloupe in Michelle's midsection. We asked if there was anyone in the area able to remove the growth. The mother said "no." We are trying some of our contacts to see if we can find a doctor who is able to help this little girl. Frank said he was willing to transport her to the location and pay for the procedure. We got the contact info. for Michelle and her mom. Pray for Michelle to get the treatment she needs. Today has been a good day. Still waiting for that darn container. Welcome to Haiti.

First, blessings to you, Gene and Trey for the work you're doing and the turmoil you're enduring.

Second, talked with the editor of the Lincoln Journal Star today and he's very interested in the possibility of a "first hand account" of your (you, Gene and Trey) experience while in Haiti. He's particularly interested in photos, so tell Gene to take lots, and a lot of variety. You might also want to start making a few notes, if you have time, about what you think the LJS readers would find most interesting/informative about your trip.

This is your chance, Mike, to help keep the "yellow journalism" dogs at bay. If it's any consolation, your high school journalism teacher was completely unqualified to teach the profession (based on your comments.) A wise writer once told me, there are no boring articles, just boring writers who don't know how to make them interesting. Big difference between that and "sensationalism."

Safe travels, my friend. Look forward to seeing you when you get back. JR

Hi John,

Thanks bro. We'll sort out media stuff with the LJS when we get back. Also, I can share my frustrations with media in general as it relates to Haiti, with you over coffee. But don't take from me my one AP class from high school! Ha Ha. :-) Blessings.
